Grand Teton euthanizes black bear after food access

    September 18, 2026

WYOMING / RankWire.AI / – Grand Teton National Park staff euthanized a black bear near Delta Lake after repeated access to human food changed its behavior. The park said the animal repeatedly approached visitors and became unusually difficult for wildlife staff to drive away. Managers concluded that repeated food rewards and increasingly close encounters created an unacceptable public safety risk. Staff immobilized the bear with a tranquilizer dart before euthanizing it at the remote backcountry location on Sept. 11.

Grand Teton urges visitors to keep human food away from bears and follow wildlife rules.

Park staff had received reports earlier in 2026 about a black bear approaching people near Delta Lake. At that stage, officials lacked enough information to determine whether food conditioning had developed. The pattern changed during the days before the bear’s removal. Officials said the animal received human food on multiple occasions while continuing to approach visitors. Wildlife staff increased monitoring and used hazing techniques, but the bear became increasingly difficult to discourage from remaining near people.

Grand Teton National Park released photographs showing visitors standing within a few feet of the bear near Delta Lake. Other images showed the animal investigating unattended food and gear among rocks, trees and logs. Park officials said visitors should never leave food unattended, even briefly. They also told visitors to collect food and other belongings immediately when a bear approaches. Wildlife staff flew the bear’s carcass out of the backcountry on the morning after the euthanasia.

    Human food alters bear behavior

The National Park Service describes food conditioning as a serious wildlife management problem because bears can learn to associate people with food. That learned behavior can make bears more willing to approach campsites, trails, picnic areas and other places used by visitors. Grand Teton managers said this bear’s repeated food rewards, close approaches and resistance to hazing met that concern. Officials determined that lethal removal was necessary after considering the bear’s behavior and available management options.

Relocation remains one tool for managing bear conflicts, but the park says moving an animal does not always solve the problem. Bears can return to established home ranges or encounter other bears after relocation. Suitable areas with natural food and little human activity can also be difficult to find. In this case, wildlife managers determined that other options had been exhausted and that the bear posed a clear safety risk. The park describes lethal removal as a last resort.

    Park reinforces bear safety rules

Grand Teton National Park continues to warn visitors that both black bears and grizzly bears remain active throughout the park. Current park guidance requires people to stay at least 100 yards from bears. Backcountry users should travel in groups, make noise and carry bear spray. Visitors must also keep food and other scented items properly secured when they are not in immediate use. The rules aim to prevent bears from receiving human food and developing behavior that can endanger people and wildlife.

The National Park Service says Grand Teton typically lethally removes about one or two bears each year after other management options fail. Most are black bears. Officials say removal occurs when a bear presents a clear risk to human safety and other measures have been exhausted. The Delta Lake case brought renewed attention to food storage and wildlife viewing rules in backcountry areas. Park managers continue to ask visitors to report bear sightings and maintain required distances during encounters.
